NHL Overview – October 8th, 2025

What’s up everyone. We have a 4 game slate with what is probably some heavy chalk, so here we go. I’ll start by going position-by-position and give you some projection and ownership notes. Then I’ll get into stacks and roster construction for both large and small fields. Use this article in conjunction with the NHL models and Contest Sims to give yourself a real chance at winning each and every slate.

NHL Positional Overview

Center

Synopsis: The chalk here will be to spend up on two centers. Sims strongly suggest you fade at least one of McDavid/Matthews for Suzuki/Kadri/Frost. I like Jack Eichel quite a bit as well.

Wing

Synopsis: We are high on Ovechkin, Nylander, and dorofeyev in the mid-tier of ownership as opposed to some of the chalkier TOR1/EDM1 guys. We are way over the Industry on Draisaitl though. Bolduc is a cheap guy if you need him. I think playing a one-off wing such as Pastrnak or Draisaitl that will be a huge part of his team’s scoring is an extremely strong play

Defense

Synopsis: Bouchard and Reilly are too cheap. You can definitely eat the Bouchard chalk and account for it elsewhere. Chycrun, Weegar, and Hutson are all strong contrarian plays the sims like

Goalies

Synopsis: Sims like Montembeault, Wolf, and Swayman. They’re all strong plays, but I have a personal bias toward Swayman because we’ve seen him be so good before.

Stacks and Theory

NHL Sims strongly suggest that CGY1 and Weegar are the strongest plays regardless of contest. This is especially true of large fields. MTL1 and BOS1 make their way into the sims at a high rate in smaller fields, SE, and 3-max contests. My observations from the slate are 1) it’s a sharp play to use a W like Pastrnak, Draisaitl or Nylander as a one-off instead of a chalky C 2) playing Matthews as a one-off is clearly -EV. His line mates are too cheap 3) I think a more balanced build without TOR will definitely be contrarian. 4) play some Flames. They suck, but Skinner is pretty mid and chalky
